Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine

Hayley has been studying Classical Chinese Medicine since 2003, when she began an internship with Taiwanese Doctor Hai Sha Ni, in Central Florida. Over the course of her training with Dr. Ni, Hayley learned about Chinese Medicine through a unique combination of classical principals, based on the work of Han Dynasty scholars and physicans, as well as Dr. Ni’s 30 plus years of experience in the field.

There are many branches and lineage styles of Chinese medicine being utilized today, as one would expect after a few thousand years of practice. The style practiced by Hayley’s mentor has remained very close to its roots, placing great emphasis on understanding and diagnosing the root cause of an ailment, and not treating symptoms.  Hai Sha Ni’s practice was primarily focused on Oncology care with great success, and as such patients flocked to his office from all over the world. Though Dr. Ni treated the whole person, and all disorders of the body, he very often saw patients with Cancer, Hepatitis and Cirrhosis. Hayley’s position at his clinic over the years became a kind of “liason” for the doctor and patient. There was always a bit of a communication and cultural gap that needed to be filled and often patients were left with more questions than Dr. Ni was able to spend time answering. So, with his blessing, this became her gap to fill. In addition to answering questions about diet, lifestyle, and perhaps explaining the nature of their imbalance and disease in a way that they could understand, Hayley provided emotional support to people facing huge life changes and difficulties. This aspect of the medicine became very important to her, and she now places great emphasis on communication, emotional support and the treatment of mental and emotional disorders.

While working with Dr. Ni, Hayley attended Florida College of Integrative Medicine in Orlando, Florida. Here she received her Bachelor’s degree and Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM). After graduating, Hayley worked at Ni’s Acupuncture Center for a while as a practitioner and continued to study with her mentor.  During this time she also worked directly with a local midwife, providing support for women during pregnancy and labor. Applying her knowledge of Classical Chinese Medicine to helping women during this time of their life quickly became another passion of hers.

In 2010 Hayley moved to Portland, OR and opened up her own clinic, New East Acupuncture. In Portland she found a thriving Classical Chinese Medicine community, and continues to study under the wing of Dr. Arnaud Versluys at The Institute of Classics in East Asian Medicine.  Here she continues her dedication to this branch of Chinese Medicine, constantly pushing herself to reach new levels of clinical efficacy for her patients.

From the time Hayley arrived in Portland, in addition to running New East Acupuncture, she worked part-time at a low cost, sliding scale, community acupuncture clinic. It was at this clinic that Hayley, Melinda and Brandy met and began dreaming of a collaboration.  In July of 2013 Hayley and Dr. Melinda Nickels opened their new clinic, Rain and Shine Holistic Healthcare. The goal of this new clinic is to create a holistic healing space for patients. Here, patients have the ability to work with a Naturopathic Physician whom applies knowledge and training of western medicine to natural modalities, a highly qualified Licensed Massage Therapist, as well as a Classical Chinese Medicine practitioner. We believe that this combination creates a very balanced and all encompassing tool box for our patients to help guide them along their path to health and balance.

As time goes on, Hayley continues to find new things to love about the Pacific Northwest. She lives in Southeast Portland and in her free time she enjoys curling up with her cat and a good book, getting out in nature to camp or hike, and travelling.

Melissa Penn Kindle, Attorney At LawI met Hayley while she was still in school at the Florida College of Integrative Medicine. I came there because I was having heart palpitations and had been to the ER twice thinking I was having a heart attack. After multiple tests, including testing with nuclear dyes, the cardiologist told me I was just ''getting old'' (I was 39 then) and that there was nothing he could do for me. Having always been fairly healthy and active, I decided not to take that for an answer and went for acupuncture treatment. Hayley worked with me intensly for many weeks and I started to feel better. She was very patient with me and my needle- phobia! After feeling better than I had in years, I trusted her and continued to follow the program of acupuncture, diet and herbs she outlined. It took some time, but then I did not get to the place of ''dis-ease'' quickly either. I now feel better than I have in many years and I know I would still be having terrible symptoms if I had not been given the care and attention Hayley gave me. Hayley is now also working with my 5 year old son. He has holes in his heart and very low appetite. While he still needs some western medical care for his heart, it is amazing to see the difference in how he feels when he is on the herbs Hayley has prescribed.

The difference between the care I got from western medical practioners and Hayley was immense. Hayley has always provided highly individualized care to me and to my son. That type of skill and care has made all the difference in our health and well being and we can't thank her enough.

AaronHayley's thoroughness and knowledge is only surpassed by her compassion for the human spirit. I walked into Hayley's office with a long list of ailments and changes I wanted to make in my mind and body. In a short time, they've all but vanished. I found myself more at peace, with more energy and focus. All aspects of my life have improved, and my daily experience is much more happy and fulfilling!Portland, OR
T.F.I have had chronic back pain my whole life. I started going to a chiropractor for it when I was 8 years old and have continued off and on ever since in order to keep it under control. There are days when sitting up for 10 minutes straight is unreasonable because the pain is too bad. When I started acupuncture, I had my doubts that a series of small needles could accomplish what, in my mind, only an hour and a half of deep tissue massage would. However, even after the very first time of working with Hayley I found myself thinking, (This is the first time in years that I have actually had no pain). None. Not even that dull ache that had for so long become the background of everyday life. It was like magic!Portland, OR
Francie NI have been seeing Hayley on and off for several years now with various issues, for both acupuncture and herbs. She is a knowledgeable, compassionate, and effective practitioner. I trust her completely and would recommend her to anyone. These are good folksPortland, OR
